NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS LAUNCHES GIVE TUESDAY CAMPAIGN

A 13-year-old girl with a feeding tube and a recent tracheotomy had to sleep on a thin pad on the floor of her home. Miles away, three young boys and their mother in a difficult situation found refuge in an empty house provided by social services. No furniture, no beds. These are scenes that can be found in too many Greene and Putnam County homes, where some 7,500 people live below the poverty line.

Luckily, these stories had a happy ending. They were four of almost 200 children in our community, so far, who had no place to sleep and received newly built beds. The new beds were provided by the local non-profit group Neighbors Helping Neighbors through one of their anchor programs ‘Beds For Kidz’.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN), formerly known as Men of Lake Oconee, has announced the launch of its campaign for Giving Tuesday (November 29), a national effort to encourage Thanksgiving donations to local charities.

The goal is to make and deliver 150 beds with bedding to kids in need in our local communities. At a cost of $250 per bed (including all bedding),  NHN has to raise $37,500 to meet its goal. Contributions of any size are welcome and needed. To contribute now go to www.nhnga.org and tap the Donate button. Your contribution will change the lives of children in our community.

NHN/Beds for Kidz is now in the second year of purchasing materials and supplies for volunteer partners of the mission team at Greensboro First United Methodist Church. They construct the sturdy wooden beds in the church’s parking lot, deliver and set them up, along with mattresses, sheets, pillows and blankets at local homes.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a 501C-3 charitable non-profit organization. Other projects include making critical repairs to homes such as replacing leaking roofs, fixing major plumbing problems and building wheelchair ramps for those in need. Another program buys or facilitates donations of used vehicles for our neighbors who are trying every day to lift themselves out of poverty.

Every dollar donated goes directly to the actual cost of the various projects. Money is used for local contractors working on local projects for local people. Operating expenses are funded separately from other sources.

All donations for Giving Tuesday will go to the Beds for Kidz project.

If you would like to help, go to the Neighbors Helping Neighbors click on the Donate now.

Every little bit helps. Imagine if that were your child or grandchild who didn’t have a bed.
